Interesting Hybrid Interesting HybridI was a bit skeptical at first. I've been gaming since Atari, and while I adore the 8-bit generation of rpg's, I've never been a fan of the Ultima series. The layout did remind me of that at first, but it looks and plays so much better, sort of like an Ultima clone that's been revamped to cater to a newer market, while still maintaining an 8-bit style that's disguised in either early SNES or early PC graphics. It's very simple and quick to learn, and it's great for gaming on the road, although I doubt I'd spend a lot of time playing it at home when I have access to a variety of console, handheld, and PC games. It's also easy to look at and read without feeling you need to squint or get a pair of glasses, unlike some other recent games that attempt the same thing (Eternal Lux, I'm looking at you). The only cons are, no music and no intro storyline. I was hoping for a bit of original 8-bit MIDI, and the only blooping sound effect whenever you make a move gets annoying fast. A small blurb of what your goal is when you start the game would have been nice, and wouldn't have added much for size. But not including it at the intro does remind me of some of the classic NES titles where you had to read the manual to get the story... so, I've a bit of a love / hate relationship with that particular con right now. Want something quick and fun while the wife is driving you and the kids around town? Yonder for the days of yesteryear where oldschool gaming was the best thing around? Well, here's your chance. One quick note: While ads can get annoying, I understand their use for free games. I also appreciate how they weren't as cumbersome here; they were either very small notations above the control or popped up only when you saved the game, rather than some other free rpg's that have them every few seconds of game time.
